Create engaging, whimsical and vibrant imaginary characters in the theme of Under the Toadstools along 118th Avenue to delight festival visitors young and old.

Challenge Details:

  • Creative teams will be selected by our jury to bring their fantastical visions to 118 Avenue by designing, creating and installing their art on up to six (6) pre-assigned lampposts on the Deep Freeze festival site.

  • Each team will be given 24 hours to ‘Deck Out a Lamppost’ as a creature from fairy tales, myths or pure imagination for the enjoyment of over 50,000 eager festival-goers.

  • The Lamppost Installations will begin on Saturday, January 20 at 11:00 am and must be completed within 24 hours by Sunday, January 21 at 11:00 am for the judging panel.

  • Creative Teams will be made up of up to 3 artists/designers/builders

  • Each team must submit a simple, clear proposal & project description with rough sketches

  • Participating teams will receive a $100 project credit at Edmonton ReStore North

  • Some components may be created in advance (for example – knitted or woven elements can be made in advance but must be assembled on-site). All other parts that can be created and completed during the 24 hours (embellishments, etc.) must be done on-site. 

  • Installations should be constructed from materials that do not pose any danger to artists or audiences. (Example- heavy objects that could fall from the top of the installation)

  • Artists must commit to spending a minimum of 2 hours working on the piece on-site. (weather permitting)

  • WE WANT FESTIVAL-GOERS TO SEE YOU AT WORK!

  • If a lamppost site is damaged, the artist team will be billed.

  • Installations must be dismantled by the artist(s) on the evening of January 21 after the festival closes.

  • Judges will select the prize winners on Sunday, January 21 and the judges’ decisions will be final.

  • Honorarium: $300 for first place, $200 for second and $100 for people’s choice.
